The 6 Best TV Shows That I Watched in 2020

Ah 2020, from Tiger King to banana bread, what a year! One in which we all rinsed Netflix more than ever before. Although I've been struggling with a lack of motivation, I always have a lot to say about what I've been watching. So if you're looking for something to get stuck into (new year, new show and all that) have a little look at these. 

Normal People (2020)

 

You HAVE to watch this! I’m still obsessed seven months later, based on Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel this show is everything and more. Connell is the boy everyone likes; Marianne is the smart and somewhat shy wallflower. At school they pretend not to know each other, outside they become unlikely friends and later mismatched lovers. Normal People is story of young love, the transition from teenager to adult and more than anything two people that share a deep connection. It’s a universal story of how one person can affect another changing their life in the process. The show became a phenomenon for many reasons, but what stood out was that it was so relatable, we can identify with Connell and / or Marianne. Put it on and you'll find you're hooked! For all you bookworms out there, I’m a huge fan of Sally Rooney and found Normal People to be one of the most faithful adaptations I’ve ever watched. As a side-note I have to mention the incredibly talented Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar Jones who are simply sensational. 

Nashville (2012-2018)

Bold statement but I think this may be my favourite tv show of all time! When iconic country music star Rayna James is overshadowed by young, rising star Juliette Barns she makes it her mission to up her game and get back to the top of the charts. I’ve always wanted to watch Nashville, being a country music fan, but didn’t find the time until lockdown. The show, despite being fictional, is quite realistic in the sense that it uses authentic venues like The Bluebird Café and The Grand Ole Opry  (aka the mother church of country music). The show also has its own original songs, I had the soundtrack on repeat, and appearances from stars including The Lumineers, Florida Georgia Line and even Elton John. I was invested in Nashville and could absolutely watch it again and again.

How to Get Away with Murder (2014-2020)

 

Another one I finally had time to watch during lockdown and I’m so glad I did! This show had me on the edge of my seat and I’m sad that it’s over. Annalise Keating is a law professor at Philadelphia university who, with five of her brightest students, gets caught up in six seasons worth of lies and murder. Annalise Keating is a bad bitch in the truest form, she’s feisty, fearless and always there to clean up everyone else’s mess. This show has an ensemble cast focusing on her students and colleagues rather than revolving exclusively around her. I can totally see why How to Get Away with Murder was such a success with audiences and critics, from Emmy’s to GLAAD awards. Give it a try and I guarantee you’ll be gripped! 

Line of Duty (2012-)
 
OMG! Why hadn’t I watched this show before now? Again, another one that had me hook, line and sinker. I audibly gasped, screamed and laughed whilst watching Line of Duty and can’t wait for season six to be released in March 2021(fingers crossed). Created by Jed Mercurio, it is considered one of the best British crime dramas. The show follows DS Steve Arnott and his colleagues at Anti-Corruption Unit 12 as they investigate various cases involving corrupt police officers. In some way, whether that be through character or event, each season links to the last which I think is good to keep an audience engaged. For the last five seasons we’ve watched eagerly as the team uncovered an organised crime group deep rooted in the police force, a scary thought! The guest star for season six, previously we’ve seen Keeley Hawes and Stephen Graham, is Kelly Macdonald but we aren't really sure where the narrative will take us as of yet. I’m sure you’ve all heard of Line of Duty and there’s a reason for it. You won’t regret watching this!

Next in Fashion (2020)
 
Although I’ve been living in loungewear and pyjamas this year, as we all have, I’m actually big into fashion. So when I saw this show advertised on Netflix, I had to give it a go. Presented by Queer Eye’s Tan France and fashion icon Alexa Chung, Next in Fashion is a reality design competition. What more can you ask for? It follows designers from around the world as they compete for a chance to win a collection on Net-a-Porter and $250,000 to build their brand. This is light-hearted with different challenges / themes every episode, for example a whole episode focused on denim! Tan France and Alexa Chung are such a fun duo too! I was invested from the beginning after seeing Daniel Fletcher on the show, a Brit who designs unisex clothing worn by Harry Styles (super-fan over here). My favourite aspect of Next in Fashion was being able to follow the designers on their journey, seeing their creativity develop and change to fit the briefs, and forming friendships. I’d definitely recommend this show if you’re looking for an easy and entertaining watch! 

The Crown (2012-)

Many of us are fascinated by the royal family, the way they've shaped British society / culture and, of course, the drama! This show is a prime example of this, created because of our curiosity with Queen Elizabeth II. The Crown is a historical drama about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II beginning just as she ascends the throne and the decades that follow. The show gives insight into the romances, politics, and personal interests that ultimately shaped the later years of the twentieth century. When watching The Crown it is important to remember that although it depicts true events it is, to some extent, fiction and not completely historically accurate! Each season covers a different time period with new actors being cast every two seasons, for example Olivia Coleman took over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from Claire Foy for seasons three and four. I have to admit that when Olivia Coleman took over I struggled with the adjustment, but you just have to stick it out. Season four was released in November and highly anticipated by fans (enter Lady Diana Spencer and her turbulent marriage to Prince Charles). It was my favourite season so far; from the character development and narrative, to the unbelievable costumes and sets. The Crown has been renewed for two more seasons and has become one of the most expensive television shows to date- no surprise considering they film in luxurious country houses, locations across the UK and even South Africa! I would totally recommend this to any of you who're intrigued by the royal family or even enjoy a little period drama.
